Histomonas meleagridis is the causative agent of blackhead disease, which is a health concern in turkey production. Histostat, the only commercial preventative for blackhead disease, was removed from the market on Jan. 1 because the active ingredient nitarsone (4-nitrophenylarsonic acid) contained organic arsenic. Because of this, it is imperative to find other preventatives.
