Barley genome sequenced

Research could lead to better beer and provide tool for scientists to better understand other crops, including rice and wheat.

Methodologically significant data on the barley genome has been published by an international consortium, with the participation of Helmholtz Zentrum München's Plant Genome & Systems Biology Department (PGSB) in Germany, the University of California-Riverside and the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke).

The publication recently appeared in Nature.

Malted barley is used in brewing, and the unmalted form of the grain is processed into pearl barley or flo
