Extreme fire weather conditions caused many fires in Montana, Oregon and California to gain thousands of acres on Monday, according to the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC). As of Sept. 5, more than 27,000 firefighters and support personnel have been assigned to 81 large fires that have burned 1.4 million acres in nine western states.
