USDA Ag Outlook: Record meat production to weigh on markets

Lower prices expected for cattle, hogs and turkeys, with broiler prices to be fractionally higher.

Last year was the first time since 2008 that production of beef, pork, broilers and turkeys all increased from the prior year. Total red meat and poultry production grew 3.1% to a record 97.6 billion lb. in 2016. However, the market continues to face headwinds.

“Despite improvements in demand, these record production levels, coupled with increases in beef production, are expected to weigh on markets,” Shayle D. Shagam, livestock analyst for the World Agricultural Outlook B
