The most recent U.S. Drought Monitor showed that more than 36% of the contiguous 48 states are in moderate to extreme drought, affecting more than 77 million people. While the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reported that this was a decrease from the prior week’s 39.6%, it pointed out that extreme drought (D3) increased from 2.6% last week to nearly 3.0%.
