Pancosma, BASF to defend patents on metal-glycinates

Pancosma SA and BASF SE announced Jan. 19 that they have intensified their efforts to enforce their intellectual property rights for their metal-glycinates trace mineral products.

In mid-September 2017, the two companies filed a second lawsuit against a potential patent infringer at the district court of Düsseldorf, Germany, which is still on-going. In October 2016, both companies had initiated legal action by filing lawsuits against potential patent infringers at the same district court, according to the announcement.

Pancosma and BASF’s metal-glycinates are trace elements organically bound to glycine, e.g., copper, iron, manganese and zinc for use in animal feed. The metal-glycinates offered by both companies are patent protected due to their unique chemical structures and the technology that is used to produce them, they said.

The products are dustless, free-flowing granules with excellent mixing properties and dissolve easily in water, Pancosma and BASF said. Both companies are marketing these unique metal-glycinates for animal nutrition.

Pancosma and BASF invest heavily in research and development. They said they respect the intellectual property rights of third parties and welcome innovation from other companies that also contribute to meeting the needs of a growing population worldwide. In addition, securing intellectual property is an integral part of both companies' innovation strategies.

Therefore, Pancosma and BASF have decided to enforce their existing rights against third parties, which, in their opinion, are in breach of the patent laws.

Founded in 1947, Pancosma is a global pioneer and leader in developing, manufacturing and distributing a wide range of innovative feed additives. The company is based in Geneva, Switzerland, and is present in 75 countries worldwide. The portfolio comprises of phytonutrient-based technologies, organic trace minerals and palatants.

BASF Nutrition & Health provides a comprehensive product and service portfolio for the human and animal nutrition, pharmaceutical and flavor and fragrance industries. Vitamins and carotenoids also form an important part of its animal nutrition portfolio, as do other feed additives such as trace elements, enzymes and organic acids. BASF Nutrition & Health operates sites in Europe, North America, South America and in Asia-Pacific.
