Cal-Maine Foods Inc. announced April 16 that it was notified after the close of business on April 13, 2018, by Rose Acre Farms of Seymour, Ind., about a voluntary egg recall. The eggs involved in the recall have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella Braenderup and were distributed from Rose Acre Farms' Hyde County, N.C., facility from Jan. 11, 2018, through April 12, 2018.
S. Braenderup can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems.
Healthy individuals infected with S. Braenderup can experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses, such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
Through an abundance of caution, Cal-Maine Foods said it is voluntarily recalling one load, or 23,400 doz. eggs, purchased from Rose Acre Farms and repackaged at the Cal-Maine Foods Dade City, Fla., location. The product will list the plant number of P-1359D and will have a Julian date of either 048A or 049A and a "best by" date of April 2 or 3, 2018.
All customers that received these eggs from Cal-Maine Foods have been notified of the recall. No illnesses have been reported to date, the company said. The eggs were distributed in the state of Florida.
Consumers who believe they may have purchased potentially affected shell eggs should not eat them but should return them to the store where the eggs were purchased.
