Ag tech sees less investment, more deals in 2016

A pullback in funding to robotics/farm equipment start-ups drove downward trend in ag tech for the year.

After a record-breaking 2015 across global venture capital markets, including agricultural technology, or "ag tech," a pullback was expected in 2016.

However, it was a year of contrasts, as investment in ag tech start-ups totaled $3.23 billion in 2016, a year-over-year decline of 30%, while at the same time the number of deals that closed increased 10% to 580 due to an uptick in seed stage activity (Figure).
